Fashion Flashback

Gorgeous Lydia Hearst, heiress and supermodel, was Max Studio’s autumn/winter 2008 cover girl in a gothically glam shoot held in the grounds of Easton Neston. She was having a moment then - the great-granddaughter of mogul William Randolph Hearst - winning Best International Supermodel in November of that year. She was high-profile from birth, the daughter of kidnapping victim Patricia Campbell Hearst and Bernard Shaw, her mother’s bodyguard, who would go on to run security for the Hearst Corporation. She in turn would cover Vogue’s across the world as well as pose for Vuitton, Moschino, Prada and DKNY. She’s having another moment now in the US, as one of the team coach’s on Naomi Campbell’s model search show, The Face. It’s all about Team Hearst.

Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent

'Yves Saint Laurent' is the fashion film of the season and tells the gripping story of the great designers rise from 22-year-old creative director of the house of Dior to the inspirational genius who founded one of the most iconic fashion brands in history.

It doesn’t hold back from showing YSL’s darker moments either, a manic depressive whose rock bottom moments were kept from imploding by his long-term partner (and business partner) Pierre Berge, who gave his backing to this movie.

But the great glamour moments are there too, fittingly for one of the greatest names in fashion history, a designer who helped re-invigorate the Couture as well as making ready-to-wear chic. He invented ‘Le Smoking’ giving women the tuxedo suit. He was ’70s rock n’ roll. He was king of the great fashion quote too: “Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.” And there you have it.

Cheltenham Festival 2014

Cheltenham Festival 2014

The Duchess of Cornwall was at Cheltenham Races yesterday; always the early springtime fling for the British society set. Equestrian fashion is always something that jumps back in the saddle. There’s the Middletons and Royals wafting past the finishing line track side in their sharply cut tweeds crowned with glossy furs hats. There’s Monaco royal Charlotte Casiraghi who wears kit designed by Gucci on an eventing circuit where she rubs shoulders with other chic, jodhpur clad fillies like Jessica Springsteen. It’s here, on horse back, that the clothes look so smart, tight-fitting and practical - no wonder that Hermes and Ralph Lauren took the trend to its logical conclusion in the ’90s. And no wonder the MaxStudio polo team looks so cool in its uniform. The secret to perfecting that pose? The six essentials according to Gucci designer Frida Giannini are: “Tailored jackets, riding boots, white shirts, stretch-slim trousers, a great leather belt - and perfect posture”.

The Man Who Fell to Kensington

The Man Who Fell to Kensington

I, I will be king. And you, you will be queen: London has gone Bowie mad as the Victoria and Albert Museum dusts off the old and throws up the relatively new with the blockbuster, sell-out, all-singing, all-dancing show: “David Bowie is.” From the night last week that Tilda Swinton, who plays the rock legend in his latest music video, arrived at the opening party hosted by Gucci, 300 pieces from his legendary archive, including the costumes (designed with the likes of Kansai Yamamoto and Alexander McQueen), the photos, films, set design, handwritten lyrics and even the star’s own instruments have been fawned over. Five decades of changing style? Check. The Ziggy Stardust bodysuit? Check. Unseen footage of the cultural icon? Check. In the last room giant screens throw up footage of Bowie in legendary performances - and with three versions of ‘Heroes’ available to listen to simultaneously on the audio-guide, it’s a sparkly way to escape the Easter snow…..just for one day.

Spring/Summer 2013 Campaign Shoot

A beautiful collection deserves an equally stunning backdrop. Aboard a yacht Leon Max and photographer Phillip Dixon scouted the exquisite island of Mustique for the perfect spot to capture the luxury, ease and beauty of the Spring/Summer 2013 collection. A week of work and play in the island sun produced a series of magical images representing the collection as embodied by model beauties Katia Elizarova and Vika.

The natural charm of Mustique provides the ideal backdrop to showcase the airy watercolor printed dresses. Inspired by the grounded tones of white sand beaches and the multicolored depth of island waterfalls, bathed in rays of sunlight, the soft draping and movement of the dresses becomes ethereal.

The Spring/Summer 2013 collection is complete with looks for all occasions. Casual weekend pieces include nautical striped dresses ideal for vacationing, along with breathable knits, collared shirts and lightweight coats inspired by the English countryside. For weekdays, it’s skirt suits, lightweight blazers and on trend microprint suiting. Evening wear includes cocktail dresses with sheer cut outs, asymmetrical necklines and back tie dresses in bold reds and romantic blacks. Available in-store and online shop the collection.

A Stylist’s Musings

3/13/2012 12:32:00 PM

A Stylist’s Musings

The classic inspiration of the poetry between a woman and a horse: the pairing of energy and movement and like a woman, the horse is a mysterious creature whose power and grace have intrigued humans for thousands of years.

I met a dozen grey horses while preparing for this shoot and when I met this horse named Ice, I hadn’t known of his inspiring past film work (Water for Elephants and Narnia, for example) and just fell head over heels in love! I touched him and he responded in such a lovely and open way, I knew he was the one.

The pale art direction, not only of the ocean & sand, but with the one neutral dress needed his colouring. The result is a moment caught of a dream. I had found my treasure.  The diaphanous chiffon dress had a lightness of spirit, danced with the wind and the colour is stunning but not shocking.

Your own energy interacts with a horse, and our model Katia E. has classical ballet training and a lovely spirit. Their partnership was extraordinary. I wanted to incorporate Katia’s authentic ability to move with the modern romanticism and movement of the Collection.

The photographer Phillip Dixon is one-of-a kind, as an artist and as a person. He makes the magic happen! Which he did as he achieved to bring both the model and the horse in the perfect pose, at the same time. He paints with light and the end result is magical.

To have a desire to put beautiful things into the world and to advertise them, I feel that there has to be a sense of authenticity to the image. The viewer today is quite sophisticated and wants to feel as if she can be inspired by or to be a part of the image, which then makes her aware of the clothes she buys. She takes a part of that romance with her every day she wears it. Incorporating my love for horses and my adoration of fashion as my daily life raised a question: Is the relationship between a woman and horse any different than fashion and it’s loyal enthusiasts?

Partying in Paris

3/9/2012 12:20:00 PM

Partying in Paris

Nicole Kidman, Mila Kunis, Katy Perry and Jessica Alba were just some of the A-list names in the social throng of Paris fashion week.

Glamorous Paris fashion week is a wonder to behold and when night draws, the real business is done. This is the business of looking fabulous. After the Lanvin show (it’s the 10th anniversary of Alber Elbaz helming the label) it was the models Karlie Kloss and Lily Donaldson who led the celebrations, dragging Tilda Swinton and cacophony of fellow cool cats along for the ride. They all wanted to salute this popular designer as well as a radiant looking Jessica Alba who had swung in bringing some Hollywood flair to the Parisienne proceedings. What is it about Sunday nights and fashion week? Don’t any of these people have to get up on a Monday morning? P. Diddy was spotted zipping from the Kenzo party to the Givenchy party arriving just in the nick of time to hear Alicia Keys perform for Riccardo Tisci as well as Marina Abramovic and Hedi Slimane. Across town there were three generations of Jaggers – Bianca, daughter Jade and granddaughter, Amba Jackson - at the ball Dior threw at the Hotel de Rothschild. Here it was all fin de siècle decadence and feasting on foie gras and macaroons, with society beauties like Mary Charteris, and Stella Tennant straight off the Givenchy runway, all there to see Victoire de Castellane’s new jewelry line for the French house. Well, fashion girls are impressed by someone every now and then. The Pinaults, Gareth Pugh, Marc Newson, euro IT-stylist Giovanna Battaglia and some of the more wacky creatures in town pitched up to support Dasha Zhukova and the launch of the summer issue of her magazine, Garage. But things were really revved up last night when Kanye West threw his after show party at La Halle Freyssinet which not only had the cooler than thou Azealia Banks (the fashion world is currently in a quagmire over who is cooler, this songstress or Lana Del Rey?) but also a go-kart track set up around the catwalk. This set never being the sort to remain low-key it was only a matter of minutes before some of the coolest kids in fashion were pulling helmets over their perfectly coiffed hair and racing around the track, the main instigators being funsters Alexander Wang, Karlie Kloss and Katy Perry. Nothing was going to get in the way of Anna Dello Russo and this photo op. Philip Treacy hats being dropped in favor of crash helmets? It doesn’t get much stranger than that.
