NYFW SS14 Review
When you can’t get a reservation at any restaurant, when there’s a cluster of models on every corner and when the September issue of Vogue is so heavy it saves you a trip to the gym it can only mean one thing. New York Fashion Week of course. Los Angeles may have the Oscars but for this city NYFW is one of its most monumental events of the season and this year being its 70th anniversary has generated more buzz than ever before. The shows got off to a good start with new comers and old favourites showcasing their SS14 collections. Trendy brand Opening Ceremony debuted their first ever runway show, a mix of street wear and high fashion. With celebrities such as Rihanna and Justin Bieber attending, it was a big success. There was also plenty of entertainment for the guests including a photo booth, a nail salon, and a hot dog cart. However the show that everyone was talking about was Alexander Wang. Doing what he does best, Wang bought back the cool factor with a 90’s edge. There was white leather, crop tops and clever T-shirts displaying the words “parental guidance” across them. So it’s no wonder he chose two of Britain’s coolest exports, Edie Campbell and Georgia May Jagger to model the new collection. Equally if not more exciting than the shows are the after party’s. Rapper of the moment Kendrick Lamar headlined the first big party of the week at the famous Milk studios, while just blocks away at another venue Blurred lines singer Robin Thicke gave the guests of Treats! Magazine a very sexy performance with half naked models dancing next to him. As the week progressed there was a bevy of glamorous events bringing in all sorts from each end of the fashion spectrum. There was the Sacks fifth avenue Dior dinner attended by beauty’s such as Jessica Biel and Maria Sharapova, juxtaposed with The high street brand H&M’s party which attracted a more rock n roll set of guests. Although every year is different sometimes a little tradition is needed which is why as always, Marc Jacobs will be closing Fashion Week and no doubt it will be a wonder to the eye. Needless to say no matter what you’re attending there’s something fun for everyone at New York Fashion Week.
