Having a Ball

Horses and the weather were the two very English subjects covered over  dinner during the annual Ball the Earl and Countess of March host during Glorious Goodwood, the Sussex race meeting this year intermittently lashed by rain. Fortunately the unruly sun shone on the March’s guests, who included designer Leon Max and Katia Elizarova, who dined on a menu of cray fish mousse and lamb in the plush ballroom behind Goodwood House’s unassuming Regency exterior served by waiters in Regency dress. And then it was time for hours of dancing because, of course, as Miss Austen points out:  “It may be possible to do without dancing entirely….but when a beginning is made…it must be a very heavy set that does not ask for more.”
