Royal Academy Summer Exhibit

Royal Academy Summer Exhibit

Captain Cook was on the cusp of discovering New Zealand during the first of these Exhibitions and - this show is the 245th - it still remains the largest art open show in the world with the Royal Academicians choosing what pieces are chosen and where it is hung. They also select their own work and display there too on the hallowed walls of Burlington House. This year one large section of those hallowed walls are filled with tapestries by the cross-dressing Grayson Perry. Meanwhile in the rest of the roomy galleries diverse works clutter the walls from roof to floor. Equally diverse was the colourful collection of society and sleb folk who cluttered the courtyard and galleries of the august Burlington. Jasmine Guinness, Lady Victoria Hervey and the Chanel muse Amanda, Lady Harlech were all out to fete the new whilst surrounded by the old.

Style Guide: Summer Sporting Events

Saturday 1st June - a red letter day indeed. In England they’re praying for sun and the first day of a glorious summer. Unlikely. Meanwhile In New York the Veuve Clicquot polo classic will kick off the summer social season on the East Coast. It will raise funds for Liberty State Park - devastated by Hurricane Sandy it’s only hosting a few events this year, this polo classic being one of them - and a fine chance to be decked out in the summer whites available from MaxStudio, embrace a summer dress, channel some lace detail, serve with a Panama hat - and you’re good to go.

England expects too - this summer the annual round of summer sporting events kicks off at Royal Ascot, the race meeting held in the shadow of Windsor Castle and frequented by most members of the Royal Family. Hot on its heels is the tennis at Wimbledon, the regatta at Henley and the Cowes week of racing around the Isle of Wight. Back in America there are some cooly cut classics from MaxStudio which can calmly brave the late August of Flushing Meadows for the US Tennis Open or some prim pastels for the Hamptons Classic Horse Show in Bridgehampton. What would Daisy Buchanan say to the 21st century Long Island set? “I’m sophisticated. GOD, I’m sophisticated,” no doubt.

From the Met to Miami - Top Parties of 2012

Anna Wintour, Carey Mulligan and Miuccia Prada Host the Met Ball

From the moment Diana Vreeland, an ex-editrix of US Vogue founded a ball to raise funds for the Metropolitan’s Costume Institute it became the kick off carnival for the New York uptown social set. In 2012 it was yet again a fashion tsunami and the hottest party ticket on the planet. Jessica Alba was in gold one-shouldered Kors, Carey Mulligan in shimmering fish scales from Prada and channeling the evening’s muse, the Great Gatsby’s Carey Mulligan while Beyonce stole the show in sheer Givenchy.

Leon Max Hosts the Serpentine Summer Party

A few months later and over to London where designer Leon Max hosts London’s answer to the Met - a fundraiser for the Serpentine Gallery. There were three generations of Jaggers on parade, Bianca, Jade and Amba, shiny show ponies of rock n’ roll chic, a mild political scandal to talk about in the undulating shape of this year’s Pavilion designed by Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei, while model Erin O’Connor distracted in black, feathered Leon Max, as did Amber Le Bon with her Grecian chic.

London Olympics Closing Ceremony

There was another big bash in London town this summer - and this time everyone was invited. A global audience of billions tuned in to watch the creme de la creme of British music (and the Spice Girls) and the jeunesse doree of the model pack (Kate, Naomi, the Lilys, Donaldson and Cole, Jourdan, Stella et al) shake their stuff. This was legs phenomenal on parade. As well as Russell Brand popping up as a Willy Wonka-type leading the Magical Mystery Tour.

The British Fashion Awards

As Awards Ceremonies go this one had an IT moment. Stella McCartney rode out the Olympic wave and having designed Team GB’s outfits it was to universal acclaim that she stormed the podium to claim the designer brand award and the designer of the year award. But this year’s fash pack fiesta will go down in glossy history as the moment ‘The New Kate Moss’ was born - step-up young Cara Delevingne. Now, behave.

 Art Basel Miami

Actress Margo Stilley described this year’s Miami Art Basel in one succinct sentence: “There was a party for every thing, everywhere, every night with absolutely every single designer, artist, celebrity and collector you can possibly imagine and all looking better than a tear sheet from Vogue.” Sounds like that’s one art fair worth rsvp’ing to.  From the White Cube party where Owen Wilson rolled up his sleeves up and helped the bar staff to power playing at the Chanel dinner hosted by Dasha Zhukova and Wendi Murdoch where  Demi Moore arrived with a kitten and left with Vito Schnabel and the Hilton sisters bopped by Lenny Kravitz. After a week in Miami, sounds like you need a holiday.

Artists We Love: Azealia Banks

Azealia Banks is the foul-mouthed fashionista who in a matter of months since her track “212” became a viral sensation has become the darling of the couture crowd. Trust the musically interested Kaiser Karl to book her for his Paris party back in January and then again for the Chanel opening in Japan where her performance will surely go down as one of the more interesting moments of fashion history. Sarah Jessica Parker, Karlie Kloss and Joan Smalls hardly batted an eyelid. But whatever one’s reservations about her saucy lyrics her bouncy cute style and charming manner have made her one popular hip hop princess and the perfect choice to sing at the Serpentine Summer Party which was co-hosted by Leon Max. She emerged to perform in huge wings which when she worked the stage jostled around in the most delightful, darling way. And there’s nothing more satisfying than watching hoards of socialites bouncing up and down to killa hip hop lyrics in their uptown outfits. When her set was over she scooped by her New Best Friend, the Brit IT model of the moment Cara Delevingne, and off they went together bouncing and laughing into the Serpentine sunset.

Serpentine Gallery Summer Party Co-Hosted by Leon Max

When three generations of Jaggers turn up you know you’ve got a good party. You would have thought that Bianca and her granddaughter Amba might have been having a quiet week in preparation for the rock n’ roll wedding of the year (Jade’s) at the weekend but they were having none of it. Because this year’s Serpentine Summer party co-hosted by Leon Max went with more than just the proverbial bang. First up, there was international political intrigue - of an artistic nature - as the gallery had looked to Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei as their go-to guy for the design of this year’s pavilion which he executed along with Herzog & de Meuron. Was Ai allowed to leave Beijing to attend the Hyde Park event? No wei. Then there was the art, from the gracious hand of Yoko Ono. Guests tied labels to her wish trees while Bianca stood transfixed at a screen showing John Lennon’s backside. She loved it. Then there were the guests. Erin O’Connor went for black, feathered frothery in Leon Max and Amber Le Bon went Grecian rock n’roll. Arizona Muse whispered with Cara Delevingne while fashion mavens Josephine de La Baume, Suki Waterhouse and Edie Campbell rocked out to the racy lyrics of fashion’s rapper de jour Azealia Banks. A few days later, down at Easton Neston, Leon Max’s country home and design studio a small clapped out old bus could be seen chugging around the estate. When they were intercepted the passengers, some well-worn rockers, said they were there for Jade’s wedding. “We’re the band,” they claimed. “I think we’ve had enough parties for this week,” Mr Max murmured after their realization that they’d gone to the wrong house and had chugged off down the drive in hot pursuit of their rock n’ roll quarry.
